Hello!
I am three years old, sitting on my mother’s lap, her fingers guiding mine. The needle in my left hand, the rustic white of flour-sack muslin, and the rhythm of the first few stitches claim me. It’s no surprise. Sewing is in my DNA.
My great-grandfather was a tailor, my great-grandmother, a milliner. Both of my grandmothers sewed during and after the great depression, cutting hand-me-down clothing and repurposing the usable bits into fashionable, well-fitting garments for their large families. Growing up, I cherished outings to fabric stores with my mother, an expert seamstress, selecting fabrics, buttons and threads to feed my growing appetite to dream through sewing and design.
As an adult, my professional career in the U.S. Foreign Service exposed me to diverse textile traditions and fabrication techniques; giving me the opportunity to acquire a collection of wonderful fabrics, each with a unique origin story.
Today, Lea Perez Couture is a celebration of family, these stories and the myriad ways in which couture knits our world together.
